He has extensive knowledge in developing creative tax planning strategies for privately held businesses and their owners. Mr. Carlevaris has a strong technical background, excellent analytical capabilities and a proven ability to interface with customers, vendors, attorneys and bankers on behalf of his clients.

He values his role as a trusted financial advisor and prides himself on his accessibility to clients. Some representative recent engagements Mr. Carlevaris has handled include:

  • Analyzing job costs to determine profitability – A contractor client was so focused on managing existing contracts in the field and bidding new contracts that they did not have enough time to oversee the accounting for the projects. Therefore, the monthly financial statements were not presenting a realistic picture of how the company was performing since figures were not consistently being updated. Mr. Carlevaris restructured the accounting department and designed a system with clear accounting policies and procedures to allow them to calculate job costs using the percentage of completion method. The contractor now is able to determine how jobs are progressing more efficiently and has allowed the owner to be more proactive with contracts rather than reactionary.
  • Assistance with purchase of certain assets of a business – A distributor was contemplating acquiring distribution rights of a major line. Mr. Carlevaris assisted the client in preparing a budget and cash flow forecast for the next five years to determine the financial effect of financing the transaction. Mr. Carlevaris wanted to ensure that for the distributor to be competitive and viable over the long term, they should enjoy a reasonable and realistic return on their investment for the business risk they were undertaking. Mr. Carlevaris analyzed the costs of the purchase and the forecasted revenues and determined that the transaction was profitable. The result was that the distributor was able to increase net profit.
  • Managing Non-Profit Organizations – Non-profit organizations throughout the country are feeling the impact of societal and economic changes. For many charitable organizations it has become more difficult, time-consuming and expensive to raise money because of increased competition for the fund-raising dollar. Managing a non-profit organization of any type is more complex than ever before. Mr. Carlevaris has assisted many non-profit organizations in understanding federal guidelines and managing financial requirements in the most cost-effective and time-efficient way possible.

John Carlevaris is a member of the Construction Financial Management Association and is active in the Olympic Club. He holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of San Francisco. Mr. Carlevaris is married and lives in San Mateo with his wife, Anne and daughter, Gianna.
